Game Concept
Working Title:
Mats Maze
Concept statement:
Mats Maze is about a man called Mat who went out with mates for his 50th birthday. Mat had one too many beers and blacked out, he wakes up to find himself in the middle of a maze alone and very hungover. He must try and escape before he is devoured by the residents of the maze.
Genre:
Top-Down – shooter – action – maze-game – single player – puzzle game – casual
Mats Maze will be a Top-down game due to my skill level and suiting the maze-game gameplay. Ill incorporate shooting into the game for enjoyment purposes and to make it more action like than the average maze-game. I've chosen a single player game due to the nature of Mats Maze and again my skill level. I want a casual game for my players as it suits my game concept and the feel I'm trying to achieve.
Concept creations process:
The idea began with me wanting to develop a Pac-man clone, which is renowned for its straight forward yet addictive maze gameplay. However, I noticed that we get extra marks for original ideas, so I decided to expand upon making a clone and created a similar but original idea.
My idea to enhance upon the basic set up of Pac-man was to expand the area of play by creating a larger maze area with an exit, the exit being the goal to finishing the game. I wanted to keep the aspect of trying to avoid contact with the enemy while also adding being able to have access to a weapon with limited ammo/use similar to Pac-man where players are mostly in avoidance mode unless they collect power-ups.
I wanted to allow players to collect and manage their ammunition adding an additional layer of strategy. Players must decide when to conserve ammo and when to eliminate enemies. The ability to attack enemies can make each encounter potentially unique based on how much ammunition is available. This heightens the game's tension while players are trying to strategically clear areas to make navigation easier.
The goal was to reimagine the classic Pac-man while introducing fresh elements that would meet the criteria for the rubric, while also creating a fun and casual experience.
Audience and competitive analysis:
Audience:
There is a huge audience for these types of games as they take little skill or time to learn the basic controls and to begin having fun.
The majority audience will be young adults to middle aged gamers who grew up playing retro 2d games like Pac-man, but anyone from kids to adults can enjoy the adventure through the maze in this fun casual experience.
Mats Maze could also appeal to people who don't have access to powerful technology as Max-Maze will be 2d and very easily run, it could also be ported to mobile in the future increasing the reach of the game.
Competitive analysis:
Due to the nature of Mats-Maze there are many games that would be competitors, games like The Binding of Issac come to mind in the top-down /shooting genre. In saying that I can’t think of many direct competitors for maze/shooting games so hopefully I can reach a virtually untouched market.
Game treatment and concept art:
Unlike traditional Top-down shooters, Mats Maze incorporates a strategic combat where players must decide when to engage with enemies or conserve their limited ammunition and flee. This adds a layer of depth to the game, as players weigh the risks and benefits of using their resources to clear paths versus avoiding confrontation.
Weapons:
Mats weapons have a lot to do with his situation, his main plan of attack is throwing empty bottles at the enemies that were left lying around after his night out (bottles will do the most damage). There will also be rocks he can throw at the enemies which will not do much damage.
Story:
The story of Mats maze is simple yet fun, after a huge night out Mat has blacked out and has become lost on the walk home. To his surprise he wakes up in the middle of a maze surrounded by walls with no idea how he got there. He hears an eerie growl from the distance and knows he’s in danger, “it's time to go”.
Power-ups:
Throughout the maze, players can find special power-ups that temporarily enhance their abilities, such as increased speed, health or enhanced firepower. These powerups will change the pace of gameplay and ensure a casual fun environment.
Camera:
The player will only be able to see the area of the screen they are in as the camera will be zoomed in on the player. This will create a challenge and make the game more immersive and satisfying to solve.
Audio:
To try and entice people into Daze-Maze I will have funny audio of the hungover Mat for a memorable experience plus the atmosphere of a suspenseful and goofy maze. I also want to get audio for the enemies, if possible, to continue to add to the overall feel and atmosphere of the maze.
Enemies:
For enemies there will be a few different options. The undead will be the hardest as they have super strength, don't feel pain and have high health, ghosts will be easy as they don't do much damage and can be killed or outrun easily and possums which are aggressive and do a lot of damage but have medium health.
Concept art:
Below is a maze of similar style to what I'll be creating except you’ll only be able to see the current column of the maze the player is in. Ill also be adding decorations to the corridors.
